Winterize Your Collector Car PDF Print E-mail
You've invested a lot of time and money into your collector car and if you live in an area with cold winters and don't own a heated garage, you'll need to store you vehicle somewhere.  With a few simple steps you can reduce the chance of any issues and protect your car over the winter months when it does not get any use.

A.  Fill up the Gas Tank-  Filling up the gas tank will reduce the space that condensation can appear.  Also, keep the fuel system protected by adding a Fuel Stabilizer when filling up before storing it for the winter months.  Run it for a bit to ensure the stabilizer runs through the entire fuel system.

B.  Change the Oil- Change the oil as well as the filter and be sure to add oil that provides protection against corrosion.

C.  Keep the Battery Charged-  Hook up a charger to your battery from time to time to keep the charge in your battery in the cold weather.

D.  Protect Your Tires-  To prevent flat spots in your tires and to reduce the stress on the suspension, the best way to store your car is on jack stands.  If you can't do this, lowering the air pressure in your tires a bit will help.

E.  Protect Your Paint-  Thoroughly Wash and Wax your car before storing it.  Address the interior as well, if you have leather or vinyl seats coat them with a Protectant.  Last, cover the car with a breathable cloth or synthetic cover.  Putting plastic or a tarpalin will just encourage condensation and rust.

D.  Mothballs- Place some mothballs in and around your car.  This will keep the animals at bay.  I've also found that dryer sheets seem to work just the same, and they smell better  Also, cover your tailpipes to prevent animals from borrowing up in the exhaust.

F.  Insurance- Insure you car and make sure you have proper coverage.  Many insurance companies offer collector car insurance for low use and very reasonable prices, if you car is over 15 years old, do some research into this type of insurance.
